Bear Lake Hidden Gems

by Natalie Jacobsen

Bear Lake is well-known for its stunning turquoise waters and popular beaches, but there's so much more to discover beyond the typical tourist spots. Here are just a few:

Hiking

One of the best-kept secrets for hiking enthusiasts is the Limber Pine Trail. This easy, family-friendly trail is just a few miles west of Garden City and offers a serene 1.2-mile loop through a beautiful forest. The highlight of the trail is the massive, ancient limber pine tree that is estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Another fantastic hike is the High Creek Trail in the nearby Cache National Forest. This trail is more challenging, featuring stunning views, waterfalls, and the opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitat.

Biking

For mountain bikers, the North Beach Trail is a hidden gem offering a mix of terrain and beautiful scenery. Located on the Idaho side of Bear Lake, this trail is relatively unknown to tourists but loved by locals for its peaceful environment and moderate difficulty. Another excellent option is the Bear Lake Overlook Trail. This trail provides breathtaking views of Bear Lake and is perfect for intermediate riders looking for a bit of a climb and a fun descent.

ATV/Off-Roading

Bear Lake’s landscape makes it an ideal destination for ATV and off-roading enthusiasts. The Logan Canyon ATV Trail System offers a network of trails that range from easy to challenging. The less-crowded trails in the Paris Peak Road area provide a fantastic off-roading experience with stunning views and diverse terrain. For those who love exploring ghost towns, the trails around the abandoned mining town of Minersville offer an awesome experience.

Camping

If camping is your preferred way to connect with nature, the Sunrise Campground on the eastern side of Bear Lake is a hidden paradise. Nestled in trees and offering stunning lake views, this campground is far less crowded than the more popular campgrounds. For a more lakeside experience, try camping at the Rendezvous Beach State Park. While it’s a bit more known, it has some lesser-frequented spots where you can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Bear Lake.

Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts should head to the St. Charles Creek on the Idaho side of Bear Lake. This lesser-known fishing spot is perfect for catching cutthroat trout and provides a peaceful setting away from the more crowded areas.

Exploring Caves

For those interested in a unique underground adventure, the Minnetonka Cave in Idaho is a must-visit. It features impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and guided tours take you deep into the cave. The cave stays a cool 40 degrees year-round, making it a perfect summer activity to escape the heat.
