Preparing Your Home For Colder Temperatures

by Natalie Jacobsen

As the temperature starts to drop, it's time to make sure your Bear Lake home is ready for the colder months ahead. Proper maintenance now can help prevent costly repairs and keep your property in top shape, whether it’s your full-time residence or a vacation getaway. We shared a few videos about this on our social media lately, so if you’re not following, make sure you check it out! But for now, here are some essential tips to prepare your home for fall and winter:

Inspect and Service Your Heating System

One of the most important things you can do before the cold sets in is to have your heating system inspected and serviced. Whether you use a furnace, heat pump, or another system, having a professional check it for any issues will ensure it’s running efficiently when you need it most. Don’t wait until the first cold night to find out something’s wrong! (Trust me, I’ve been there)

Check for Drafts and Seal Windows and Doors

Cold drafts can significantly raise your heating costs, so inspect your windows and doors for any gaps or leaks. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal up any problem areas, and consider adding heavier curtains to help insulate windows. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to energy-efficient windows, now might be a great time to do it! As always, if you need contact information for someone to help you with any home maintenance or upgrade, reach out and I’m happy to give you some recommendations.

Clean and Inspect Your Gutters

With fall comes falling leaves, and those can quickly clog your gutters. Staying on top of cleaning out your gutters will make your life easier in a month or so when the temperatures really start to drop. Make sure water is draining properly away from your home’s foundation to avoid flooding or ice buildup during the freezing temperatures to come.

Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Irrigation Systems

To avoid burst pipes when the temperature drops, disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets and drain any irrigation systems. You can also install insulated covers on outdoor faucets to add an extra layer of protection against freezing. If you’re leaving for the winter, make sure you take care of your pipes and indoor faucets as well!

Inspect Your Roof and Chimney

Your roof is your home’s first defense against the elements, so take the time to inspect it for any missing or damaged shingles. If you have a chimney, it’s a good idea to have it cleaned and inspected by a professional to ensure it’s safe and ready for use, especially if you have a wood-burning fireplace.

Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With the heating system running and the fireplace or wood stove in use, it’s essential to ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order. Test each unit and replace the batteries as needed.

Whether you're staying through the winter or returning in the spring, proper maintenance now will ensure your property is safe, efficient, and ready to handle the cold months ahead! If you need assistance with any of these, don’t hesitate to reach out for recommendations!
