Preparing for Winter at Bear Lake

If you’re one of the lucky few who get to experience Bear Lake year-round, now’s the time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. Fall at the lake is beautiful, but it also means winter weather is just around the corner, and a little prep now can save you from headaches and stress later on.
Start by focusing on the exterior of your home. Check your roof and gutters for any leaves or debris that could lead to ice dams or leaks once the snow starts falling. Seal up any cracks or gaps around windows and doors to keep the cold air out, and replace worn weatherstripping if needed. It’s also smart to trim back any overhanging tree branches that might get heavy with snow and cause damage. Before the first freeze, shut off and drain outdoor faucets and irrigation lines to prevent burst pipes.
Inside, make sure your heating system is ready to keep you warm all winter. Have your furnace or wood stove inspected and cleaned, and double-check that your fireplace and chimney are clear and safe to use. It’s also a good time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, reverse your ceiling fans to circulate warm air, and make sure your home is sealed tight against winter drafts.
Around your property, pack up or cover outdoor furniture, toys, and decor so they’re protected from the snow. Stock up on snow removal essentials like shovels, salt, and fuel for your snowblower.
Taking care of these things now means you can spend the winter months enjoying the peace and quiet of Bear Lake without preventable emergencies popping up!
